Caring for the Elderly

Although life can be difficult and lonely for elderly, it is even more so for the elderly of Haiti who may have outlived their children and have no one to care for them. They are truly the “forgotten ones.” The ElderCare Program of Healing Haiti supports 30 elderly in the village of Titanyen which is northwest of Port-au-Prince.

The average mortality rate in Haiti is about 52 years of age, which is partially due to the lack of basic food, water, sanitation and human contact for the aged. Healing Haiti's ElderCare Program’s mission is to serve the elderly and handicapped by providing the gift of love through human contact as well as a Haitian version of “Meals on Wheels.” With this food program, elderly who once did not receive food or water every day are now eating and having fresh water daily.

The Phase II development of Grace Village will break ground on an elderly house for truly orphaned elderly who currently are shuffled from one “squatter” house to another.  Not only will they have a stable home with consistent food and water, but they will help fulfill their God-given purpose by mentoring the younger Haitian generation. The orphaned elderly will mentor the orphaned children who live at Grace Village with their wisdom, legacy of knowledge and experience of God’s blessings.

Marie is a 103-year-old elderly who is extremely grateful for the monthly visits she receives from Healing Haiti teams.

Although elder Izna Jean lives in poverty, she still finds purpose in helping a baby.

Elder Maricia Victor is delighted with the care package of basics like soap, sardines, and Tylenol that Susan delivers each quarter.

Elder Meme is delighted by visits from Healing Haiti
teams as this is some of the only consistent human
contact he receives.

Lindor is one of the orphaned elderly who is forced to "squat" in different locations because he has no consistent place to call home.
