Educating the Children
50% of adults in Haiti are unable to read or write. Children are Haiti’s greatest hope for a better future. However, only about half of grade school age children attend school. Most communities do not have public schools so privately run schools are the only option. Even though the cost is minimal by US standards, most Haitian parents cannot afford to send their children to school.
Healing Haiti supports over 1,500 children in three schools. Reiser Heights in Lespinasse, Terra Promise in Cite Soleil and The Christian School for Poor Children in Titanyen. We help to raise funds to pay teachers salaries so that school fees can be low enough to allow even the poorest families to send their children to school. In addition to providing education for students, Healing Haiti has also constructed classrooms, built school benches and given assistance for school uniforms, school supplies, food and clean water. School for a year in Haiti, along with providing two uniforms, shoes and backpack averages $300 US per child.
Over-crowded school rooms are the norm in Haiti. Even with the heat and humidity of a small classroom, these children respect that education is a privilege and are eager to come and learn. |
